Jeff Nelson

Front-end Developer

I’m a front-of-the-front-end developer with a passion for design systems, accessibility, and crafting web-based tools that help people get their work done.

Recent experience

Staff Frontend Software Engineer, Clari

Design systems
Front-end tooling

As technical lead of the design system at Clari, I built a self-sufficient codebase with automated testing, optimized builds, and versioned releases. I collaborated with the design team on system naming and design tokens, while advising on component semantics and accessibility. I maintained comprehensive documentation and served as the primary support contact, helping the system grow and educate users. Additionally, I standardized front-end tooling and architecture, evaluated technical candidates, and led regular practice group meetings to share knowledge.

  • Wrote custom GitHub workflow action to send Slack notifications when new versions of libraries were released
  • Created codemod scripts to automate updates after major version releases, reducing the effort for teams to upgrade
  • Led adoption of Chromatic for visual regression testing of UI components
  • Used Vitest/Jest, React Testing Library, and Storybook for testing UI
  • Worked with CSS Modules and Sass for styling

Web Developer, Showbie

Front-end architecture
Design systems

At Showbie, I worked across three products, building features for the main app and helping integrate a newly acquired app, including TypeScript refactoring. I implemented design system foundations with cross-platform design tokens and Storybook documentation, later extending these patterns from React to Ember for a new Admin app. I championed front-end best practices, led Tailwind CSS adoption, advocated for accessibility improvements, and maintained the marketing websites.

  • Rebuilt voice-note recorder UI from canvas to CSS, resulting in a more performant UI that was less obtrusive
  • Provided static site generation solution for a rebranded marketing site that dramatically reduced monthly hosting costs

Front-end Developer, Lift Interactive

Responsive web design
Front-end architecture

At Lift I developed diverse web projects ranging from small business sites to major marketing applications. I collaborated with Django developers on CMS configuration, worked with designers on responsive UI, and provided client CMS training. For WordPress projects, I handled hosting setup and backend configuration. I improved our front-end development process by implementing Sass architecture and Webpack bundling. I also helped develop a reusable component library to accelerate project development for both designers and developers.

  • Built custom sites on Squarespace, Wagtail, and WordPress content management systems
  • Explored dynamic visual treatments using GSAP animation, SVG filters, and modern CSS features
